- The
2012
Symposium will take place on Thursday, September 20, 2012 and Friday,
September 21, 2012 at the University of South Carolina School of Law in
Columbia, South Carolina.
- The Symposium is
open to
all members of the legal and business
communities; however, a registration fee will be required. Students, judges,
and government employees will receive a discount on this fee.
- SCJILB expects
to
offer Continuing Legal Education credits to
Symposium attendees. The number of credits offered is subject to
approval by the South Carolina Bar Association. The 2011 Symposium was approved for
5.75 CLE credits.
Speaker Information
- The keynote address will be delivered by Lord
Justice Burton, Treasurer of the Honourable Society of Gray's Inn, on
Thursday, September 20. All speakers, authors, students, SC
Bar attendees, and members of the community are cordially invited to
attend the keynote address.

All speakers and panel members will deliver their presentations on
September 21, 2012, at times to be determined by the
number and availability of speakers. The length of each presentation
will vary between 45 and 90 minutes each.
- The journal requests that speakers from outside Columbia make plans to arrive
by Thursday,
September 20. All speakers are invited to attend our Symposium
Welcome Dinner that evening.
- Travel and lodging
expenses will be covered by SCJILB in accordance
with University of South Carolina reimbursement
policies and procedures.
- All
travel expenses must be submitted to, and
approved by,
the SCJILB Symposium Editor in advance to guarantee
reimbursement.
- SCJILB will make lodging arrangements for
out-of-town speakers.
- All meals
the day of the Symposium (September
21), as well as
dinners on Thursday, Sept. 20, and Friday, Sept. 21, will be
provided by SCJILB for each speaker. The journal will be more than happy to accommodate
any special dietary restrictions. Any accommodation requests should be submitted to the
Symposium Editor as early as possible prior to the event..
- SCJILB will gladly assist all speakers
with printing any
materials to be used and distributed at the Symposium. The journal
requests that electronic and hard copies of any such materials be
submitted to the
Symposium Editor no later than two weeks prior to the date of the
Symposium.
- All speakers are requested to submit a transcript or
outline of their
proposed topic(s) and discussion(s) to the Symposium Editor by June 1, 2012. Submission by this date is required for CLE approval, as well as to ensure that the Symposium will
include a wide array of relevant sub-topics and viewpoints. Amendments to transcripts or outlines will be accepted from June 1, 2012 to August 1, 2012.
- Acceptance of an
offer to participate in the 2012
Symposium, and to
publish an article in the accompanying Symposium book, will be
finalized upon receipt by the Symposium Editor of the signed Symposium
Agreement and Publications Contract. These documents will be
distributed upon
notification of intent to accept the offer.
- Notification
of intent to accept an offer must be received no later than
May 31, 2012.
Publication
Information
- Each speaker is
asked to
submit an article related to the topic he or she will be presenting at
the Symposium for publication in the Spring Symposium edition
of SCJILB. While submission of full articles is encouraged,
speakers
may opt to submit a transcript of their discussion to
be published in lieu of a full article.
- The Journal also
accepts papers from authors who are
not planning on
speaking at the Symposium. Submissions from non-speaker authors must be
submitted to the Journal before May 31, 2012.
- Article
requirements:
- All
submissions are
subject to approval of the SCJILB editorial staff, in accordance
with the Journal's bylaws and standard operating procedures. To request a copy
of the Journal's bylaws and operating procedures, please contact the
Symposium Editor.
- SCJILB does not accept submissions that have
been published
previously.
- Articles
must conform to the Nineteenth Edition
of the Bluebook and the
Eleventh Edition of the Texas Law Review Manual on Usage &
Style. Please note that the SCJILB editorial staff will evaluate all submissions
for compliance, and reserves the right to make necessary changes. These
changes will be submitted to the author for approval prior to
publication.
- Length
and deadline requirements will vary based
on the
type of the proposed submission.
- Articles must be submitted electronically via
email
to the Symposium
Editor at symposium@scjilb.org. Confirmation of successful submission
will be sent to the author within one week of receipt of the materials.
The Journal's editorial board will inform the author whether the
submitted article has been chosen for publication within two weeks of
receipt of the submission.
